Public Hearing on Cell Tower Policy

HELP PREVENT MICROWAVE RADIATION IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS 4/29/2003

Speak Out: Tuesday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. 5th floor County Government Building (Ocean and Water streets), the Board of Supervisors will decide requirements for wireless (cell tower) communications ordinance (agenda item #93).

* * *
Did You Know That:

"Cell towers/antennae/phones expose us to microwave radiation and are risk factors for cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, cardiac arrhythmia, heart attack, reproductive problems including miscarriage & congenital malformation, neurological damage, & reduced immune system competency?" (Cell Towers: Wireless convenience or environmental hazard? by B. Blake Levitt/413-229-7935)

"The radiofrequency radiation emitted from a portable cellular telephone is better able to heat and cook than is the energy used in a microwave oven. The energy radiating from the portable cellular telephone is deposited deeply into muscle and brain tissue more efficiently than the energy used with microwave ovens." (Cellular Telephone Russian Roulette, an historical and scientific perspective by Robert Kane, an engineer who worked for the telecom industry (2001)

"That without safety requirement exemptions for the telecommunications industry, cell phones likely would not be on the market!" (Robert Kane)

"Cellular towers in the US are killing several hundred million birds each year?" (Cellular Phone Task Force, POB 1337, Mendocino, CA. 95460 707-937-3990)

That the same microwave energy in higher doses is used as a "non-lethal" weapon by the military and soon police agencies, to disperse crowds by penetrating and burning skin.

What Can You Do?

1. Personally tell property owners who rent space to cell phone companies for towers (whether church, college, business, or private residence) that it is NOT a good neighbor policy to microwave the community and wildlife. In is unacceptable that they get paid while we get microwaved. Inform them that cell companies have arranged for the landowners to be liable for future health lawsuits, not the cell companies.

2. Speak Out: Tuesday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. 5th floor County Government Building (Ocean and Water streets), the Board of Supervisors will decide requirements for wireless (cell tower) communications ordinance (agenda item #93). With your help we can craft one of the toughest ordinances in the country to regulate dangerous microwave radiation exposure from towers. Attend the meeting or communicate with the commissioners beforehand. (see below)

3. If You Can't Attend: Register your support for already submitted recommendations from SCRAM (Santa Cruz Antenna Moratorium), SNAFU (San Francisco Antenna Free Union) and former Santa Cruz Mayor/environmental attorney, Celia Scott in her 11/20/02 letter to the Planning Commission.

For those with cable tv; this meeting will be broadcast live on channel 26 at 7:30 PM.

Re: Public Hearing on Cell Tower Policy

Can you cite any information online? The show has already come and gone, and all the literary citations up there are just links to books for sale.

I understand the need to recoup research costs, but you'd think that if they really believe in their cause then they'd freely release at least some of the information.

Re: Public Hearing on Cell Tower Policy

I just took a quick look at:

www.antennafreeunion.org/

which is the SNAFU (San Francisco Antenna Free Union) mentioned in the article.

There's lots of links from there.
